Some pots I made after a long throwing session with Dale:)
----------------------------------
My first week working at OCAC with Dale was a pleasure in all regards. Working for about 4 hours each day, I was able to accomplish much more in a period of time than I would've anticipated. I really appreciated having this chunk of time to dedicate to ceramics, without interruptions or a need to rush. Even after just one week, I feel as though I've learned a great deal regarding how to throw pots in a more efficient way. By this I mean I learned to throw pots in a much shorter period of time than I used to, and although speed isn't ever the goal (at least for me), this helped me make many more pots in a given amount of time than I would've been able to in the past. I really enjoyed working alongside the fellow potters at OCAC who are there for open studio time and can say for a fact that the creative and friendly environment at OCAC has brought me a lot of inspiration. In this first week, not only was I able to throw many pots, but I also learned how to recycle clay, and how to load and unload kilns. Learning these skills was very gratifying, as it allowed me to feel much more connected to everything that goes on behind the scenes in a studio. After a year of Dale loading and unloading kilns, glazing much of our work, and giving us clay ready to use, learning these skills felt really rewarding. One of the goals I have for the next week and beyond is to ensure I dedicate a solid chunk of time each day to studio tasks that need to get done.
So sick! The clay recycling machine looks very cool
ReplyDeleteThanks for those photos, Adam. It's easy to picture your work space and your days. I am pleased to read a recognition for Dale's work in providing glaze, clean clay, and labor to get pieces in and out of the kiln --it speaks highly of you that you see that so clearly and want to contribute to the tasks in the studio.
ReplyDeleteAnd those handles look excellent. Are creating a set?
This is great to read. I can easily imagine you doing these tasks and am glad you are enjoying this time with Dale. I look forward to reading more.
